Punctuation Cheat Sheet
This cheat sheet records punctuation instructions from the MARC 21
Bibliographic Format. For fields not listed here and for further
details, consult that document, which is in Cataloger's Desktop and
also in the cataloging reference area in Monographic Services.
A mark of punctuation is a period (.), a question mark (?), an
exclamation mark (!), or a hyphen (-).
Field 020 does not end with a period.
Field 028 does not end with a mark of punctuation.
Field 034 does not end with a mark of punctuation.
Field 037 does not end with a period unless the last word in the field
is an abbreviation, initial/letter, or other data that ends with a mark
of punctuation. Subfields do not end with a mark of punctuation unless
the last word in the subfield ends with one. Qualifiers to price in
subfield $c are given in parentheses, even when the price is absent.
The period that usually precedes a Cutter number is omitted in subfield
$b of field 052. Field 052 does not end with a period.
Fields 100, 600, 700, and 800 end with a mark of punctuation or a
closing parenthesis. If the final subfields are subfield $2, $3, $4, or
$5, the mark of punctuation or closing parenthesis precedes those
subfields.
Fields 110, 610, 710, and 810 end with a mark of punctuation or a
closing parenthesis. If the final subfields are subfield $2, $3, $4, or
$5, the mark of punctuation or closing parenthesis precedes those

subfields.
Fields 130, 630, 730, and 830 end with a mark of punctuation or a
closing parenthesis. If the final subfields are subfield $2, $3, or $5,

initial/letter, or data that ends with a period.
Field 246 does not end with a mark of final punctuation unless the last
word in the field is an abbreviation, initial/letter, or data that ends
with a mark of punctuation. No punctuation precedes subfield $f unless
the item preceding subfield $f is an abbreviation, initial/letter, or

Field 256 ends with a period.
Field 260 generally ends with a mark of punctuation, a closing
parenthesis, closing angle bracket, closing bracket, or a comma.
Field 300 ends with a period if there is a 4XX in the record; otherwise

parentheses is present.

with an abbreviation, an initial/letter, or data that ends with a mark
of punctuation.
Field 500 ends with a period unless another mark of punctuation is
present. If the note is a quoted note, the period should be inside the
ending quotation mark unless the quotation ends with an ellipse, in
which case no period is added at all. If the final subfield is subfield
$5, the mark of punctuation precedes that subfield.

period is recorded, unless the last word, initial/letter, or

the final subfields are subfield $2 or $3, the mark of punctuation
